Absolutely! I have been a big fan of Project Gutenberg for many years.

Recently I found that they have added a whole slew of modern (and not so modern) science fiction authors to their collection:

I gleefully downloaded about 100 books from that list early last week.

For some time Project Gutenberg Australia has been working on extending the science fiction part of their collection:
http://gutenberg.net.au/sfproject.html
I've downloaded from it quite often. They have a lot of books there that the USA-based one doesn't have, due to the absurdly backwards copyright laws in USA. (Australia's copyright recently got extended to a stupid 70 years after the author's death. Politicians seem bent on destroying public good.)

Gutenberg Canada exists, but is pretty badly organised so far. It will be interesting to see how it progresses.

Gutenberg Philippines is concentrating mainly on local information. There are more affiliated organisations that can be read about at

I wish there was a Project Gutenberg list of science books. Hmmm... maybe I should try to make one.
